599. What if it’s NOT SIBO, IBS or IBD
Bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, food fear, and the never-ending cycle of “I treated it… so why is it back?” If that sounds familiar, this episode is required listening. In this conversation, I sit down with Angela Pifer, widely known as the “SIBO Guru,” to break down what Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth really is, why it’s so commonly missed or misdiagnosed, and why so many people relapse after treatment.
We dig into the different types of SIBO (hydrogen, methane, and hydrogen sulfide), why knowing the type matters, and how SIBO is often confused with IBS, food sensitivities, or general gut dysbiosis. Angela explains the biggest mistakes people make when trying to treat SIBO, including overusing probiotics, fiber, or antimicrobials without addressing the real drivers underneath.
We also talk about how SIBO impacts hormones, especially thyroid function, estrogen balance, and cortisol… and why motility, bile flow, and nervous system regulation are non-negotiables if you want real, lasting healing. This episode will challenge a lot of common gut health advice, but if you’ve been stuck in the SIBO loop, it may finally explain why nothing has worked long-term.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
What SIBO actually is and why it’s often overlooked or misdiagnosed
How to tell the difference between SIBO, IBS, food sensitivities, and dysbiosis
Why SIBO keeps relapsing after treatment
The biggest mistakes people make when trying to “fix” SIBO
How SIBO impacts thyroid health, estrogen, and cortisol
Why motility and bile flow are critical for recovery
When probiotics and fiber can actually make things worse
When to retest for SIBO vs when to treat based on symptoms and history
